“Tar and chip” is a finish of choice when looking for a more natural yet polished look. Unlike the smooth finish of asphalt, tar & chip is made up of hundreds of stones, including granite and natural gravel so gives great traction and tread, without the uneven surface of shingle.

The stone sizes vary from 6-20mm in diameter.

Tar and Chip surfaces can often be installed onto an existing surface such as concrete or tarmac, given they are in a reasonable condition.

Building a tar-and-chip driveway is a pretty simple process. First a hot liquid asphalt is poured over the gravel. This is followed by a coating of loose stones, which are rolled into the bitumen to form the finished surface. This process can be done twice on heavy traffic areas. It’s in the selection of this top layer of stones where you have choices to make regarding the look of your finished driveway. You can choose from different colours of stones to create a unique and personally appealing surface.
